I've given up on finding love among the human race.
For this week's installment of the music-blog-that-isn't, I thought we'd take a field trip to the general store. Need some Ajax? They've got it. Raspberry preserves? You betcha. It's close to two in the afternoon, and the air is full of dust and diesel exhaust, and somewhere, just over the horizon, an old wireless eeks out Ruth Etting.

But wait! That's so cliché: I know squat about small town living. I also know how much I dislike the term Americana -- its use tends to gravitate around record execs who have a vague and unclassifiable artist on their hands. In other words, laziness. Is lumping the following in one post any better? Probably not, but they still sound sweet from here.

Bowerbirds - In Our Talons

Christine Fellows - What Makes the Cherry Red

Jim White - That Girl from Brownsville, Texas

Peter and the Wolf - People of the Night

Wildcard: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals - Ah, Mary

One bedraggled ghost of a sonnet.
So! In the category of things I've always wanted to do comes this little number: host a music blog. But I've neither the time nor the wherewithal to deal with such a thing right now. Which brings this pale imitation -- Argyle's Portmanteau. Five songs, once a week, up for download. A miniature playlist which might well fit in with waiting for the kettle to boil or the beer to chill. It's low-commitment! A sentiment to which I can relate. And perhaps there'll be something new for you, because who doesn't love new music?

And now? Ladies' Night. Seems as good a place to start as any.

The Ting Tings - Great DJ (Dance punk/pop)

Santogold - Shove It (Ska, urban, new wave)

St. Vincent - Now, Now (Sonic folk)

Joanna Newsom - Inflammatory Writ (Chatty folk)

And the wildcard: Françoise Hardy - Je N'Attends Plus Personne (Yé-yé)

Aha, and if there's anything I love more than talking about music, it's listening to music. Please rec if you're so inclined!

You! Me! Dancing!
So, first off, thanks for all the birthday wishes!

While I'm feeling zany and not a little bit tipsy, I think I'll offer this: a five things meme. Request a "five things..." fic in any fandom I've written in the past two-ish years (predominately Good Omens, Life on Mars, Dead Like Me, Wind in the Willows, and Hot Fuzz, but feel free to peruse my tags if you're in need of a refresher), and I'll be most happy to write it for you. Really! I've rather a tetchy bit of work-related travel coming up, so I'll definitely be in need of time-fillers. &hearts

And the other totally amazing thing to come out of '83? Oh yeah.
